Program Requirements

If awarded funds:
• Bridge must meet or exceed the chosen set of specifi cations (see below).
• Bridge must be constructed or purchased within six months upon execution of the contract.
• The bridge must be used at least twice (e.g. two harvests or two different crossings) in the priority counties between June 2011 and September 2012.
• Funding recipients must follow all appropriate local, state, and federal regulations regarding timber harvesting and stream crossings and must obtain any required permits.
• Recipients must use appropriate required and recommended BMPs on the approaches and crossing.
• Upper Basin priority counties include:
o Pennsylvania: Wayne, Pike, and Monroe counties
o New York: Delaware, Sullivan, and western Ulster and Orange counties
o New Jersey: Sussex and Warren counties

Standards for bridge construction

• Bridges must be new.
• Loggers may choose between two sets of specifi cations for their bridge.
o Vermont Clean and Clear Program: Design and Specifi cations for Portable Skidder Bridges (standard or heavy-duty): (http://www.vtfpr.org/watershed/initiative.cfm)
o Recommended species: Hemlock, Oak
o Acceptable species include Softwoods (except White Pine, Cedar) and Hardwoods (except Poplar/Aspen, Basswood, Birch)
• Bridge must be portable and able to be moved and installed using harvesters’ equipment.
• Recommended span is 20 feet. The minimum span is 16 feet.
• The chosen design must be compatible with the types of equipment to be used.
• The bridge must be reusable, with a minimum lifespan of two years. The use of treated materials is preferred to extend its lifespan.
• Signage about the Common Waters Fund is required on bridge.
• CWF reserves the right to require a permanent identifi cation mark on each bridge.
• It is recommended that the bridge design be certifi ed by a registered professional engineer prior to construction.
